Documentation Xcode: A Game-Changer in App Development

In recent years, app development has become increasingly complex with various dependencies, making it challenging for developers to create high-quality documentation. Apple has introduced a revolutionary tool called DocC, which simplifies the process of creating beautiful, interactive, and native-feeling documentation right from your code. In this article, we will explore the fundamentals of using DocC in two different ways: building documentation for a framework and adding articles that provide more depth.

To get started with DocC, you need to have Xcode 13 installed on your system. Once installed, navigate to the Product menu and choose Build Documentation. This will allow you to generate documentation for your project. In my case, I used Unwrap, which is a good size of project with various dependencies, making it a great example of how DocC can be applied in real-world scenarios.

Before diving into the details, let's clarify what DocC is not. It is not a traditional documentation generator that requires manual effort to create and update documentation. Instead, DocC uses your code as input and automatically generates beautiful documentation for you.

When I first tried out DocC, I opened up one of my projects to see how it would perform. The initial results were promising, with DocC generating high-quality documentation for my project. However, I also encountered some areas where DocC didn't quite meet my expectations. This is understandable given that DocC is still in its early stages and has room for improvement.

In the long run, I hope to see DocC support other programming languages beyond Swift and Objective-C. The team behind DocC has already received requests to add Objective-C support, which is a great sign of the tool's potential.

One thing is certain – DocC is here to stay, and it has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach app development documentation. With its ability to generate beautiful, interactive, and native-feeling documentation right from your code, DocC is set to become an essential tool in any app developer's toolkit.
